The phrasebook, map and beret were natural choices when packing for the trip to Europe’s cultural epicentre. Fortunately for Mr and Mrs Houston, their preparations for Paris included annual travel insurance.

An Annual Corporate Travel policy makes more sense than individual travel insurance policies.

It’s cheaper than taking out travel insurance each time you go away. Annual policies can be set up to cover both business & private travel for owners, directors and management whilst also saving the hassle of remembering to take out insurance cover. Corporate Travel policies in most cases are also a tax deductible expense.

Now back to their trip .....

Two days before their scheduled return to Australia, Mrs Houston slipped on a Paris street and sustained a broken leg. From that point on the city’s bright lights could only be viewed from her hospital room.

While her cultural experience suffered, financially Mrs Houston remained in good shape. What could have cost $32,000 in medical bills, ambulance costs and airfares only cost $380 under the annual corporate travel policy taken out by her employer.

Her cover included:

  • ambulance to hospital and airport

  • hospitalisation in Paris for 10 days

  • additional accommodation for Mr Houston while his wife was in hospital

  • business class upgrade to accommodate Mrs Houston’s broken leg

  • taxi fares and associated living costs

Mr and Mrs Houston recognised their insurer’s reputation and integrity, but what they didn’t realise was the insurer’s capacity to work behind the scenes. The insurer engaged the services of a medical assistance firm to look after its injured policyholder and her husband.

Mr Houston said the insurer “took care of everything”, including dealing with the hospital, surgeon and all accounts.

They arranged for accommodation for him at the peak of the tourist season and contacted the couple every 24-48 hours to provide reassurance.

Seat upgrades for Mrs Houston’s return flight to Australia were arranged on their behalf – her husband (travelling economy class) made the occasional visit to his wife in business class!

Travel insurance is often viewed as a recurring expense, but taking out annual corporate travel cover makes more than just financial sense.

It’s cheaper, often extends to private holidays for owners, directors and management and saves the hassle of remembering an often overlooked necessity.

And it can be arranged easily enough by your Scott & Broad | Clark Pacific broker.
